🌐PreventionWeb is UNDRR's global knowledge-sharing platform for disaster risk reduction and resilience, connecting professionals with vital resources, expert insights, and the latest research. But don't take our word for it! 💬 📹 In this video, DRR professionals from around the world explain how they use #PreventionWeb as part of their daily disaster risk reduction and resilience building activities.
About us
At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

🔴 Disasters are anything but impartial: 90% of climate-related deaths occur in poorer countries. Inequality and disaster vulnerability are two sides of the same coin: unequal access to services increase exposure to disaster risk; while disasters worsen inequality by pushing those most at risk deeper into poverty. ➡️ https://ow.ly/EXHu50QB9GJ

☀️⛈️A hot, wet, stormy and blazing year for Europe! 🔥📈 ⚠️2024 was Europe's hottest year on record, and storms and floods took at least 335 lives, says the World Meteorological Organization & Copernicus ECMWF 2024 European State of the Climate report. Storms and floods affected 413,000 people, and wildfires affected 42,000. The alps' glaciers are shrinking faster than any other region in the world. Extreme weather cost €18 billion+ in losses in 2024 – 85% of that from flooding. 💡But Europe is also building its resilience. More countries and cities have dedicated climate adaptation plans and initiatives, mostly focused on urban areas. 🧭Explore the European State of the Climate Report ➡️ https://ow.ly/836G50VAExX #ESOTC2024 ➡️ Scroll though the highlights below 👇

🌱🏗️Blending nature-based solutions with traditional engineering approaches can often give better results than either method on its own. 🌊 New research in npj Natural Hazards shows how coastal vegetation combined with grey infrastructure (like sea walls and levees) can reduce wave energy more effectively.🌿 📊 Using advanced models that integrate wave physics, data analytics, and optimisation algorithms, the study shows how hybrid designs can be tailored to local risk levels and resilience goals. 🌧️☀️ Did you know.... flood risk can actually increase after droughts? Why? Dry, scorched soil becomes solid, unable to absorb heavy rain—leading to surface runoff and flash floods. 🌊 Healthy soil = flood prevention. 🌱 ✅ Avoid overgrazing ✅ Maintain healthy tillage ✅ Use crop cover #SoilHealth #COP16Riyadh

🌍 Real progress, real risks. In 2024, we advanced disaster risk reduction globally in numerous ways. For example: 65 countries—70% of them LDCs or SIDS—strengthened early warning systems with our support. 30 more improved their national #DRR strategies. 163 Member States are now contributing to the Sendai Framework Monitor. But the clock is ticking. With just 5 years of the Sendai Framework to go, we still have a lot to achieve. ⏳Disasters continue to steal development gains 📉 Funding gaps remain 📢But DRR is an investment in a resilient future. Thank you to every partner helping drive change on the ground. With your support our work continues in 2025. 👉 https://ow.ly/7kqI50VyLP3

👉 Only 12% of disaster-related aid funding in 2021 was spent on disaster risk reduction, prevention, and preparedness. Operationalising DRR in humanitarian and crisis settings is particularly challenging given each settings complex context. This UNDRR study explores financing of disaster risk reduction in humanitarian and crisis settings ➡️ https://ow.ly/1ah850VyM4S
